The Seven Dhatus
-
- Rasa (Plasma): The nutritional fluid derived from digested food that hydrates and nourishes all bodily tissues.
- Rakta (Blood): The blood tissue responsible for circulation, oxygenation, and sustaining vital life force.
- Mamsa (Muscle): The muscular tissue that provides physical covering, structural shape, and movement.
- Medas (Fat): The adipose and fatty tissue responsible for lubrication, insulation, and energy storage.
- Asthi (Bone): The skeletal and bone tissue that gives rigid structural support and posture to the body.
- Majja (Bone Marrow & Nervous Tissue): The soft tissue filling the bones that supports the nervous system, brain, and cognition.
- Shukra (Reproductive Tissue): The final reproductive and vital essence responsible for vitality, immunity, and creation
How nourishment flows sequentially from one dhatu to the next
Nourishment functions like a chain reaction, often compared to the transformation of milk into curd, then butter, and finally ghee.
-
- Ahara Rasa (Nutrient Fluid): Digested food first turns into a nutrient-rich fluid.
- Rasa to Rakta: The essence of Rasa Dhatu is acted upon by tissue-specific digestive fire (Dhatu Agni) to create Rakta (Blood).
- Rakta to Mamsa: The byproduct and refined essence of Rakta then densifies to form Mamsa (Muscle).
- Mamsa to Medas: Muscle tissue is further processed to produce Medas (Fat).
- Medas to Asthi: Fat tissue undergoes metabolic changes to solidify into Asthi (Bone).
- Asthi to Majja: The breakdown of bone elements leaves a cavity that is filled to create Majja (Marrow/Nerve).
- Majja to Shukra: The refined essence of marrow finally sublimates into Shukra (Reproductive tissue).
The Ultimate Product: Ojas
At the very end of this 30-day metabolic cycle, the supreme refined essence of all seven dhatus is created, known as Ojas. Ojas is not a physical tissue but the subtle energy responsible for your vitality, strength, and immune resilience.
Why the Sequence Matters
Because nourishment is sequential, a deficiency in an early dhatu creates a domino effect down the line. For example, if your digestion is weak and cannot form quality Rasa (plasma), your Rakta (blood) will lack nourishment, eventually leading to depleted Mamsa (muscle) or Asthi (bones).
Signs of depletion or imbalance in specific tissues
-
In Ayurveda, an imbalance in the tissues manifests as either Dhatu Kshaya (depletion/decrease) or Dhatu Vriddhi (excess/increase). When a tissue is depleted, it fails to support the body; when it is in excess, it creates stagnation, impurities, or abnormal growth.
Dhatu (Tissue) Signs of Depletion (Kshaya) Signs of Excess (Vriddhi) 1. Rasa (Plasma) Dry skin, dehydration, extreme fatigue, intolerance to sound, emaciation. Excess saliva, nausea, sluggish digestion, feeling of heaviness, phlegm. 2. Rakta (Blood) Pale complexion, cold extremities, rough skin, desire for sour/cold foods. Skin eruptions (acne, eczema), red eyes, bleeding gums, burning sensations. 3. Mamsa (Muscle) Muscle wasting, debility, joint pain, emaciation (especially in the buttocks, neck, and abdomen). Fibroids, physical heaviness, gland enlargement, extra muscle mass or lumps. 4. Medas (Fat) Joint cracking, dry eyes, loss of sensation in the waist, thin physique. Obesity, oily skin, shortness of breath on slight exertion, excessive sweating. 5. Asthi (Bone) Bone and joint pain, brittle nails, hair loss, loose teeth. Extra bony growths (spurs), extra teeth, overlapping or enlarged bones. 6. Majja (Marrow/Nerve) Emptiness in bones, osteoporosis, dizziness, fainting, dark spots before the eyes. Heaviness in the eyes and limbs, thick or swollen joints, sluggishness. 7. Shukra (Reproductive) Low libido, infertility, delayed ejaculation, physical weakness, fatigue. Excessive sexual desire, seminal calculi (prostatic stones), structural congestion. How Imbalances Occur
- Vata Dosha typically causes depletion (Kshaya) due to its dry, light, and catabolic nature.
- Kapha Dosha typically causes excess (Vriddhi) because of its heavy, static, and anabolic nature.
- Pitta Dosha tends to cause inflammation or qualitative corruption within the tissues (especially in Rakta).
