Ayurveda, an ancient holistic science of healing, offers a logical and scientific approach to determining the correct diet based on an individual’s constitution.

Vata, pitta, and Kapha; the tri-dosha, are the elements that comprise individual constitutions. This approach is quite different from the “traditional” view of a balanced diet; viz., eating daily from the basic food groups; According to Ayurveda, every food has its own taste (rasa), a heating or cooling energy (virya) and post-digestive effect (vipak).

Thus, according to Ayurveda, one should eat according to one’s constitution and take fruits, starches, proteins, and fats separately at different times of the day. Combining foods improperly can produce indigestion, fermentation, putrefaction, and gas formation. This condition, if prolonged, can lead to toxemia and disease complex.

Pitta Dosha: Fire + Water elements

Pitta Aggravated by: Sour, Salty and Pungent

Pitta Pacify by: Sweet, bitter, and Astringent

As a rule, to pacify pitta one should eat more salads, sweet desserts, more vegetables, water, cooling herbs and spices. And try to avoid sour salty and spicy food. Try to consume less alcohol, meat and fried food.

Pittas do best on cool, uncooked foods. So the Pitta couple can have lots of salads, raw vegetables, and fresh fruits and be very healthy. Pitta’s digestion is very good, and especially so midday when Pitta is at its peak. It is favourable for the largest meal of the day to be eaten around noontime.

Basically, the foods that Pittas should avoid are the ones that are too spicy or too salty. Pittas can be at risk for ulcers, and should avoid anything too acidic. Alcohol and smoking are two of the most Pitta aggravating things and should be avoided at all costs.

Pittas are frequently thirsty and should always have water or fruit juice handy. Cool drinks are good, especially during the summer.
