Triphala- the wonder remedy
Triphala is perhaps one of the most widely used herbal preparation in Ayurveda. It is a Sanskrit word which means three fruits because it is made of equal parts of three fruits taken without seed:
Amalaki (Emblica Officinalis),
Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica), and
Haritaki (Terminalia chebula).
The reason behind its popularity is Triphala balances all three doshas. It helps with all digestive problems, is a good laxative and helps remove toxins. Digestive issues are seen as the root of many health problems in Ayurveda. When our body gets rid of toxins, our skin glows. Thus we see Triphala being used as not only a medicinal product but also a beauty supplement. Among other less known benefits of Triphala are it supports boosts Immunity, reduces Inflammation, removes excess fat.
Moderns science has shown Triphala to be a powerful antioxidant, protecting cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. A recent article said, “ Clinical studies have also shown that Triphala was found to have good laxative property, to improve appetite and reduce gastric hyperacidity.
The authors added “ Triphala to possess free radical scavenging, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, antipyretic, analgesic, antibacterial, anti-mutagenic, wound healing, anti-cariogenic, ant stress, adaptogen, hypo-glycemic, anticancer, chemo protective, radio protective and chemo preventive effects” With so many benefits it is hardly surprising this herb is widely seen as a general purpose preparation that has a balancing effect on the human body.
