Stay young and beautiful

Face is often the first thing we notice about each other. So much so that very often our initial and sometimes final impression of others is based on how their faces look. Looking beautiful is always in every women’s wish list. Looking after the face is important but often not done well. Not for a second I suggest we should spend lot of money or time on cosmetics or facial treatments. There are some simple things we can all do to make our faces look younger and healthier. I ayurveda we believe there are two approaches to have good face care routine. External and Internal, of which Internal being more important.

Internal routine includes

Eat well: Ayurveda suggest eating combination of six taste in your meals is the balanced meal diet. Eating right type of food in right time is the key to keep healthy skin. Eat more fresh fruit and vegetables. Avoid processed food, too salty/sugary food or fast food for healthy and happy skin.

Breath well: Pranayam helps to get positive energy flow in our body mind and spirit. This increases vital energy (Prana) and reduces stress. Without sufficient prana skin loses its vitality and glow. We need more prana in our body to stay young and beautiful a it radiant through our face.

Drink well: Drinking plenty of water daily is great way to hydrate and nourish your skin. It helps preventing wrinkles. signs of aging skin. Hydrate skin shows natural glow and makes you look younger. Alcohol is notorious for dehydrating the skin, it makes our skin look older and tired. Moderation is good with alcohol.

Sleep well: A good night sleep is one of the great ways of making our face look rested, fresh and young. Studies suggests  that growth hormones are released during sleep which promotes the collagen and elastins and accelerate the production of layers of skin. Helping in giving you a ageless, vibrant skin.

External Routine includes

Good cleanse:  Cleaning our face is important. Ayurveda suggest good routine of cleansing,  nourishing and moisturising. After all it is THE MOST exposed part of our body and accumulates tons of pollutants and dirt. We also need to remove some of the skin cells dying every minute! Did you know we lose 30,000 to 40,000 dead skin cells every minute? That means we lose around 50 million cells every day. Imagine what will happen if we just allow these cells to collect on our skin. Mother nature, in her efficient manner, does take care to reduce this piling up. We often try to help her by using soaps or chemical cleansers which in turn strip the skin of protective oils and the good bacteria that our skin needs. I like simple methods like washing with warm water and while the skin is still moist drying with a soft but moderately rough towel. Ayurveda recommends lemon and honey for cleansing- they do the same job as soaps and cleanser without the harm.

Nourishing and Moisturising:  Gentle moisturisers go a long way in keeping our skin feeling soft and looking youthful. Fortunately there are many herbal preparations around which contain less paraben than the pure chemical ones.

Protection: Sunburns are bad for the skin.  Money invested in good sunscreen is wise but other steps are important too.  Having said this, we need to be in the Sun to get the good Vitamin D that us girls especially need as we get older. How long being in the Sun is good is a million dollar question. A general rule of thumb is the lighter the skin longer we need. But then prolonged exposure to the Sun not only hastens ageing but also increases the risk of skin cancer. Research from the UK says the best time to produce vitamin D  is between 11am and 3pm. And the good news is that most light skinned people need only about 10 to 15 minutes.  Exposing larger area of skin exposed to sunlight reduces time needed.

And what about our lips? Remember what Marilyn Monroe said “a smile is the best makeup any girls can wear”.  Rubbing some sugar-and-water solution on our lips not only moisturises but the sugar removes dead cells.  Then moisturize them with butter or ghee.

One last thing –don’t feel shy in taking care of facial hair. Now and then check the eyebrows, chin, upper lip or around the ears. Keeping facial hair in check helps the skin look even and gives us a clean look. Soaking the skin in warm water before using tweezers helps.
